Summary
Captions help identify and describe figures and tables in your documents. In Jama Connect®, you can add captions in two ways:
- Create a dedicated Jama item for each figure or table and use it as the caption.
- Use the HTML
<caption>element or captioned image feature directly within a rich text field.
Method choice depends on your workflow:
- Method 1 (create separate Jama items for each figure or table) is recommended when traceability, reuse, and precise cross-referencing are important.
- Method 2 (HTML captions in rich text) is better suited for a more document-like authoring experience where content is managed within a single item.
Both methods support export to Microsoft Word with numbered figures and tables.
Resolution
Method 1: Create a Dedicated Jama Item for Each Figure or Table
Create a separate Jama item for each figure or table. Place the figure or table itself in the Description field, and enter the caption text in the Name field.
To make figures and tables easier to identify and organize, you can also add a Type field to distinguish between figures, tables, and other content. This step is optional but recommended.
Pros
- Use Jama's built-in hyperlink feature to create cross-references to figures and tables from any rich text field.
- Export figures and tables to Microsoft Word with automatically generated numbering and captions.
Cons
- Text, figures, and tables must be stored as separate Jama items, which can slow data entry and complicate imports.
- Figure and table numbering is available only in exported documents and is not displayed in Jama Connect.
Method 2: Use HTML Captions
Add captions directly to figures and tables within a rich text field using HTML caption support.
-
For tables: Use the HTML
<caption>element. - For figures: Open Image Properties, enable Captioned image, and then enter the caption directly beneath the image in the rich text editor.
Pros
- Allows you to create an entire document section within a single Jama item, making content authoring and import more similar to a traditional document workflow.
- Exports to Microsoft Word with automatically generated numbering and captions for figures and tables.
Cons
- Jama's built-in hyperlink feature can only link to the containing section, not to an individual figure or table.
- Figure and table numbering is available only in exported documents and is not displayed in Jama Connect.
