Summary

Jama Connect® supports importing test cases with multiple test steps through Microsoft Excel, but not directly from Microsoft Word. Customers who maintain legacy Word documents often store test steps in tables, with each row representing a separate test step.

This article describes a workaround that preserves the formatting by first importing the Word document into a temporary item type, exporting the data to Excel, and then importing the Excel file into the Test Case item type.

Resolution

Video demonstration of the instructions below.

Create a temporary item type

Create a temporary item type (for example, Word Import Test Case) with custom text fields to store the following information:

  • Step Action
  • Expected Result
  • Step Notes

Enable the item type in the project by navigating to Admin > Project > Item Types.

Prepare the Word document

Verify that the Word document uses a consistent format before importing.

Each test case should use a Word heading style for the test case name, followed by a table that contains the test steps. Each table should use the same column headers throughout the document.

Import the Word document

Import the Word document into the temporary Test Case Import item type.

During the import, select the option to create one item for each table row. This separates each test step into an individual Jama Connect® item while preserving the rich text formatting from the Word document.

Export the imported items

After the import completes, switch to List View.

Configure the view to display the fields required for the final import, such as Name, Step Action, Expected Result, and Step Notes.

Export the list using Export > Office Templates to create a Roundtrip for Excel export.

Do not use the standard Export to Excel option, as it does not preserve rich text formatting.

Prepare the Excel file

Open the exported Excel workbook.

Update the spreadsheet so that the test case name is repeated for every row that belongs to the same test case. This groups all test steps under the correct test case during the final import.

Review the spreadsheet to ensure the data is complete and correctly organized before importing it back into Jama Connect®.

Import the Excel file into the Test Case item type

Import the prepared Excel workbook into the standard Test Case item type.

Map the Excel columns to the corresponding Jama Connect® fields, including:

  • Name
  • Step Action
  • Expected Result
  • Step Notes

Complete the import to create test cases with multiple test steps while preserving the formatting from the original Word document.
