Environmental details: Jama Connect® users
Summary
In Jama Connect, each user is identified by a unique username, and a single user cannot have multiple usernames within the same instance. This is important for:
- Maintaining data integrity
- Accurate audit trails
- Ensuring compliance with licensing models
What's Supported
One Username per User Account
Changing a Username: Administrators can edit an existing user’s username in the Admin Console; however, this action replaces the old one, and users cannot retain multiple usernames.
Multiple Roles and Permissions: A single username can have different roles across numerous projects or varying levels of access, depending on how the user is assigned.
Reactivating Deactivated Users: Admins can reactivate a previously deactivated user using the same username.
But Users Can Be Re-Created or Renamed
There are a few related scenarios to be aware of:
Scenario | Explanation |
---|---|
Username Changed | An Admin can change the username of an existing account, but this replaces the old name—it doesn’t allow two. |
Duplicate Accounts | If someone is provisioned twice (e.g., once via LDAP/SSO and again manually), Jama may treat these as separate users with distinct usernames and histories. |
Multiple Roles or Project Access | A single username can be assigned different roles across projects or multiple licenses (e.g., creator in one project, reviewer in another), but the username remains the same. |
Not Supported
- One person having multiple active usernames linked to the same email address within a single Jama instance
- Switching between usernames for one user within a single session
- Aliases or secondary logins under the same profile
Recommended Admin Actions
- Audit the user list regularly to remove or deactivate duplicates
- Use LDAP or SAML-based SSO for consistent, centralized user management
- When renaming or retiring users, document changes to maintain clear traceability
