Summary

Analyze your organization's desired process to determine how Jama Connect® will support it. Define the scope of your initial deployment, compare your process with recommended Jama Connect practices and configurations, identify gaps, and document any configuration changes needed to support your process.

The results of this analysis will help your Jama Connect Administrator configure the solution to align with your organization's needs.

Resolution

Process analysis helps you move from understanding your current processes and desired future state to defining how Jama Connect should be configured to support them.

Consider your existing project artifacts and processes, your desired future state, and the goals established during onboarding. Compare these needs with recommended Jama Connect frameworks to identify where process changes or additional configuration may be necessary.

Define the Scope of Your Process

Review your desired process and the goals documented in your onboarding materials to determine the scope and focus of your deployment.

Identify which processes and capabilities Jama Connect should support during the initial deployment. You may choose a phased approach to address needs and opportunities based on priority.

For example:

  • Phase 1: Requirements and testing
  • Phase 2: Risk management
  • Phase 3: Integrations

A phased approach can help your organization focus on its highest-priority needs while establishing a foundation for expanding the use of Jama Connect over time.

Review Recommended Processes and Configuration

With your initial scope defined, compare your desired future state with the recommended Jama Connect procedures and configuration for your industry.

If an industry-specific dataset was provided, use it as a starting point for understanding recommended practices, content, and configuration.

If an industry-specific dataset is not available, review the datasets available in your Jama Connect instance and determine which most closely aligns with your organization's processes and needs.

As you review the recommended configuration, consider:

  • Which existing content and artifacts should be managed in Jama Connect.
  • How Jama Connect capabilities align with your desired processes.
  • Which recommended practices can be adopted as provided.
  • Where your organization's needs differ from the recommended configuration.

Identify and Analyze Gaps

Compare your desired process and existing artifacts with the recommended use and configuration of Jama Connect.

Look for gaps between:

  • Your current process and desired future state.
  • Your desired process and the recommended Jama Connect process.
  • Content or artifacts your organization currently captures and the content represented in Jama Connect.
  • Your organization's needs and the provided configuration.

For each gap, determine whether a change to your process, the recommended Jama Connect configuration, or both is appropriate.

Avoid recreating an existing process or tool simply because it is familiar. Consider whether the recommended Jama Connect approach can help your organization improve or simplify the process before introducing additional configuration.

Document Configuration Needs

Document the Jama Connect configuration needed to support your agreed-upon process and explain why each change is necessary.

Your process analysis can inform decisions about:

  • Item types, fields, and pick lists.
  • Relationships between content.
  • Project structure, including components, sets, and folders.
  • Required outputs.
  • Other configuration needed to support the desired process.

Process analysis translates your organization's content and desired processes into Jama Connect design and configuration decisions.

Clearly documenting the reason for each configuration decision helps ensure that configuration supports a defined process or business need rather than introducing unnecessary complexity.

This is especially important when modifying a Jama Software® provided industry-specific dataset.

What to Do Next

Use the results of your process analysis as input for the Jama Connect Administrator responsible for designing and configuring your environment.

Provide the administrator with:

  • The agreed-upon deployment scope.
  • Your desired future-state processes.
  • The content and artifacts that are in scope.
  • Identified process or configuration gaps.
  • Required configuration changes and the reason for each change.

The administrator can use these inputs to define item types, relationships, project structure, outputs, and other configuration needed to align Jama Connect with your desired process.
