Summary

This article explains how to import multiple test cases into Jama Connect® using an Excel spreadsheet.

Proper spreadsheet setup is essential to ensure a smooth import process, accurate field mapping, and to prevent errors during import. Test Case Names are repeated to ensure steps are correctly associated with their respective test cases.

Resolution

Step 1: Set up the Excel spreadsheet

Prepare your Excel file with clearly defined columns. A typical structure includes:

  • Test Case Name
  • Step Action
  • Expected Result
  • Notes

Each Test Case Name should be repeated for every associated step to ensure steps are grouped correctly under the same test case in Jama Connect®.

Step 2: Start the import in Jama Connect®

  1. Navigate to the Project Tree
  2. Select the folder or set where the test cases will be imported
  3. Right-click and select Import

Step 3: Select the file

  • Browse and select the prepared Excel file for import

Step 4: Map the import fields

In the import wizard:

  • Select the correct Excel worksheet
  • Confirm the header row (for example, row 1 if headers are in the first row)

You can map Excel columns to Jama Connect® item fields. In this example, focus on:

  • Test Case Name
  • Step Action
  • Expected Result
  • Notes

The mapping ensures Excel data aligns correctly with Jama Connect® fields.

Round Trip option:
Round Trip allows previously imported items to be exported, edited offline, and re-imported to update existing records.

Step 5: Define hierarchy (if applicable)

  • The Item-subitem option is enabled by default
  • Use this feature to establish hierarchy in test cases
  • Hierarchy can be represented in Excel using indentation or formatting (such as color coding or structured rows)

Step 6: Complete the import

  • Review your mappings
  • Submit the import process

Once complete, the imported test cases should appear in the selected project location.
