Overview
This guide provides a structured approach to ensuring that test steps are correctly included in a ReqIF export and can be successfully imported into Jama Connect.
Step 1: Confirm Test Steps Are in the ReqIF Export
✔ Open the ReqIF file in a text editor (e.g., Notepad++, Visual Studio Code) or ReqIF Studio.
✔ Search for the keyword:
css
CopyEdit
<SPEC-OBJECT>
✔ Locate test cases and check for step data inside attributes such as:
php-template
CopyEdit
<ATTRIBUTE-VALUE-XHTML> <DEFINITION-REF>
✔ If test steps are missing, they were not exported correctly.
✔ If test steps exist in the ReqIF but do not import into Jama, continue to Step 2.
Step 2: Ensure Test Steps Are Mapped in DX Export
✔ Open DX and go to the Export Mapping Settings.
✔ Look for a field labeled "Steps" or similar in the mapping screen.
✔ If missing, check whether the test step field exists in the source project.
✔ If available, ensure it is mapped correctly to the ReqIF structure.
✔ If the mapping looks correct, proceed to Step 3.
Step 3: Verify Test Steps in ReqIF Using ReqIF Studio
✔ Open the ReqIF file in ReqIF Studio (a free tool for analyzing ReqIF files).
✔ Navigate to the Test Case objects in the document.
✔ Expand the attributes and check for a field related to test steps.
✔ If test steps exist in the ReqIF file but are missing in Jama, DX import settings need adjustment (Step 4).
Step 4: Ensure the "Include Test Steps" Option is Enabled in DX Import
✔ Before running the DX import, verify that the "Include Test Steps" checkbox is enabled in DX settings.
✔ Run a test import with a single test case to see if test steps appear.
✔ If test steps still do not appear, try importing using the DX 3.9.4 snapshot version (see DX Snapshot Workaround).
Step 5: Validate Imported Test Steps in Jama
✔ After import, go to the Test Case module in Jama Connect.
✔ Open a test case and check whether steps are visible.
✔ If missing, check the import logs for errors related to missing test step mappings.
Best Practices to Ensure Successful Test Step Migration
✅ Always validate test step presence in ReqIF before attempting an import.
✅ Ensure the "Include Test Steps" option is enabled in DX settings.
✅ Use ReqIF Studio to inspect and confirm test step attributes before import.
✅ If DX 3.9.3 does not work, consider using the DX 3.9.4 snapshot workaround.
Conclusion
-
Test steps must be explicitly present in the ReqIF file before import.
-
DX settings should be configured to include test steps in the import process.
-
ReqIF Studio can help confirm if test steps exist in the exported file.
-
If DX fails to import test steps, try the DX 3.9.4 snapshot workaround.
